Investigating the effect of banding on the impact resistance behavior of microalloy steel used in pipelines

Abstract

Bonding or banding refers to the layering of the steel structure parallel to the flow direction of the material during the working process. This research investigated the amount of ferritic-pearlitic bonding present in the API GRB microalloy steel sheets used in the pipe industry and its effect on the impact energy of these types of steels. The special purpose of this research is to compare the impact properties of banded and non-banded samples in two vertical and parallel rolling directions. Metallographic and impact tests were performed on these samples at -20 and 0 °C in two directions, perpendicular and parallel to rolling. Investigations showed that the impact angle of the sample in relation to the rolling direction is very effective in its impact resistance, that is, while in the rolling direction it decreases the impact resistance, it increases it in the vertical direction.
